Tero Saarinen Company celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new double bill. Could you take some of my weight...?, an early work by Tero Saarinen, will re-premiere in 2016. A completely new addition to the Company's own repertoire is MESH, a Saarinen creation originally premiered in 2014 by 26 Japanese dancers. Other performances include Full Moon Dance Festival, Finland on 24 July and 12. – 15 October in Almi Hall, Helsinki.
Could you take some of my weight...? explores and plays with the various meanings, both concrete and symbolic, of weight. It is interpreted by Pekka Louhio and David Scarantino, recently praised for their soloist roles in Saarinen’s take on Sibelius’ Kullervo at the Finnish National Opera. The duet, bursting with male energy and virtuosity, was originally premiered by the cofounders of Tero Saarinen Company –, Saarinen and Yuval Pick, – back in 1999.
MESH, exploring the themes of diversity, loneliness and liberation, was premiered in Japan in 2014. The work will have its European premiere in Kuopio, Finland in 2016. Paying homage to Saarinen’s roots in Butoh, the choreography features the brilliant Butoh dancer Mitsutake Kasai (Japan). Tero Saarinen Company’s dancers will also be complemented by students from Finnish National Ballet School, and the Theatre Academy.
