Macbeth

Tero Saarinen Company and TTT Theatre, a leading Finnish drama theatre, join forces in presenting a multidisciplinary interpretation of Shakespeare’s classic. The amalgamation of dance, drama and juggling creates a razor-sharp and current exploration into greed and manipulation.

About the creation

Macbeth (1606) is one of the most violent depictions of greed for power in dramatic literature. Shakespeare’s tragedy of the Macbeths who will stop at nothing to seize the crown is captivating in its poignancy and timelessness.

”In our interpretation, I wanted to plunge into the acts of a manipulating and contaminating mind – without overlooking the ingrained irony and humour characteristic to Shakespeare’s works”, director-choreographer Tero Saarinen says.

In the seamless amalgamation of dance, drama and juggling, co-directed with Otso Kautto, everyone on stage is both subject and object to the narrative. Michael Baran’s austere adaptation of the original play, Mikki Kunttu’s lighting design, Samu-Jussi Koski’s costumes and Marko Nyberg’s music and sound design revise the tragedy to the present.

The creation will premiere at the Dance House Helsinki on 13 March, and repremiere in Tampere at TTT’s Main Stage on 12 September, 2024. The performance is subtitled in English (limited visibility from rows 1–4). Please note that the creation includes strong flashing lights.

“Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen's bracing dance-theatre startles from the start. -- An arrestingly modern vision.”

- THE GUARDIAN, 2024

“TSC’s and TTT's Macbeth is a performance that lingers in your mind for a long time. - - the performance, in its brilliance and innovative form, brought light and joy to the viewer’s life.``

- DEMOKRAATTI, 2024

“Tero Saarinen’s Macbeth is brilliant and eerily topical. Shakespeare’s bloody but human Macbeth receives a fresh and elegant reinterpretation.”

- HBL, 2024

``The result is something completely new. A stunning performance that moves between a dance creation and a spoken play, without being either of those things. The focus was on the breathtakingly stunning group, which was like one glorious, multi-locular organism.
